The Haptic Art Performance Experience Project
“The experience of wearing the vests whilst witnessing Madeline dance was all-encompassing. An absolute thrill! This is an exciting space to watch ”

INTRODUCTION
Dance is physical.
It reshapes the body.
It vibrates through muscle, breath, and skin.
On stage, performers give everything—effort, touch, vulnerability.
Transformation happens in real time.
But the audience stands at a distance.
Watching.
Separated.
What if that distance disappeared?
What if dance could be felt, not just seen?
A shared, sensory experience—
where performer and audience meet.
Introducing:
Music: Not Impossible
Music: Not Impossible is a Vibrotextile™ wearable technology that translates sound onto the skin through vibration. Inspired by the deaf community, this technology provides all users a unique and nuanced music experience.
In 2023, The Newmarket Collective in Melbourne partnered with Music:NI to establish a new platform in Australia aimed at enhancing the live performance experience for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing creatives and audience members. These vibro-tactile haptic vests have already proven effective in enriching the experiences of Hard of Hearing attendees in the music industry, garnering overwhelmingly positive feedback.
How does it work?
The wearable vibro-tactile haptic suits consist of a body pack, wristbands and ankle bands, with 24 touch points on the body. Intricate vibrations are programmed to be sent through to these points using specially designed software. The vibrations can be programmed to a large range of levels of intensity, flowing through the body with great precision, providing a state-of-the-art, high definition surround sensory experience.
The Research Project
We explore how dance can be felt, not just seen.
Using wearable vibration technology, we translate movement into physical sensation—mapping rhythm, pressure, and touch onto the body. Choreography is mirrored through programmed touch points, with varying intensities that reflect movement, contact, and musicality.
Vibrations are pre-programmed to a soundtrack or performed live, allowing the sound engineer to play the body in real time alongside the dancers. The body becomes a musical instrument: movement seen becomes sensation felt.
Wearing the vests also shapes how movement is created. Sound generates vibration, vibration influences motion, and motion reshapes the sensory experience—forming a continuous feedback loop. A composer works closely with the team to create a carefully curated score.
This work invites audiences to listen with their bodies, bridging the space between performer and viewer to create a shared, embodied experience.
Accessibility and Shared Experience
This technology is not only a creative tool—it expands who dance is for. By translating sound and movement into physical sensation, it enhances the experience for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing audiences, while offering a tactile way of engaging with dance for people who are vision impaired.
Accessibility is embedded in the research process. We work with an access consultant to shape the experience for a range of access needs, and collaborate with creatives with lived experience of disability to inform the artistic and choreographic development. Through this approach, the work aims to create a truly shared experience—one that opens dance to more bodies, more senses, and more ways of being present.

Out Of Bounds - May 2025
Dancehouse and Lucy Guerin Inc
Out of Bounds is an exciting platform to share choreographic ideas, co-presented in 2025 by Lucy Guerin Inc and Dancehouse.
Last May, 25 Victorian independent dance artists and collectives presented short showings of their works-in-progress to local audiences and fellow artists across two days at Dancehouse.
Curated by Lucy Guerin, Dr Phillip Adams, and Josh Wright, the 2025 edition invites artists to share up to 10 minutes of recent choreographic investigations, followed by facilitated discussions with peers and experienced dance practitioners.
We were selected to be a part of the curation, and shared a short excerpt of our research project, with 10 audience members wearing the Haptic vests.
Thank you New Market Collective, Lucy Guerin Inc and Dancehouse for this opportunity!
